Have you heard of the one-visit crown? If you have ever had a crown, you know that it can be quite an undertaking: one visit for the preparation, an uncomfortable impression session, wearing a temporary (that you hope does not fall off), and another visit for placement of the permanent crown. I’m happy to tell you, the two-visit crown is history at Back Mountain Dental.
With CEREC, I offer one-visit, porcelain crowns, inlays, and onlays. In a single office visit, I can design, mill, and place a permanent restoration that looks and feels natural. And you won’t have to endure a messy, foul-tasting dental impression.
CEREC is an innovative technology that incorporates computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) to fabricate custom-fitted dental restorations instead of sending an impression to a dental lab. Special software and digital imaging allows me to design a precision restoration, and the detailed plan is sent directly to a milling machine in my office. I choose a shade of CEREC ceramic block that matches your affected tooth, then the milling unit sculpts the restoration in about one hour. Once the crown, inlay, or onlay is ready, I permanently secure it onto the prepared tooth, so you won’t wear a temporary, you won’t need an impression, and you won’t have to come in for a follow-up visit.
What’s an inlay and onlay? These restorations are sometimes referred to as partial crowns or 3/4 crowns. Inlays are milled restorations that fit between the cusps, or bumps, on top of a tooth. Onlays fit over a cusp and extend down the side of a tooth. Inlays and onlays are stronger than fillings, so they offer a great compromise between a filling and a crown.
