Give Mom Teeth Whitening for Our Wilkes-Barre Dentist

At Back Mountain Dental in Trucksville, we use Deep Bleaching to lighten teeth beyond expectations. Deep Bleaching is so powerful, this whitening method has even been proven to remove tetracycline stains (the brown or gray striped intrinsic stains from certain medications.) Over-the-counter and quick in-office whitening treatments are all ineffective for removing this type of staining.

How Deep Bleaching Works

Deep Bleaching works by improving the smile’s ability to absorb oxygen. Once oxygen is introduced to the inside of the tooth, it breaks down dark staining molecules and removes the discoloration to whiten teeth. Using this safe bleaching technology, Dr. DeFinnis can give patients a bright white smile that can last indefinitely with simple at-home touch ups. The entire process involves just two office visits, and two weeks of at-home treatment to an amazingly white smile. Continue reading

Beautiful Restorative Dentistry in Trucksville

man smile 300x200 Beautiful Restorative Dentistry in TrucksvilleWhy should I  replace metal fillings?

Made of metal, these amalgam fillings are conspicuous. The dark metal stands out against your remaining white tooth structure signaling to everyone that you have had dental work. Additionally, new studies suggest that the mercury found in amalgam fillings can be dangerous to your health. While this point is contested by some professionals, it is common knowledge that ingesting mercury is poisonous for your body.

Additionally, metal fillings often contract and expand with hot and cold temperatures. Repetitive contraction and expansion can be harmful to your tooth by creating spaces between the filling and the tooth structure. Bacteria can seep into the inner tooth and create a new cavity beneath the metal filling.

What are the benefits of a composite resin filling?

White fillings are made of composite resin, which is a durable plastic material. These fillings can be dyed to match the exact color of your tooth, so that only you and your dentist will know you have had a filling. Additionally, the composite resin allows the dentist to conserve as much healthy tooth structure as possible, and the material adheres firmly to your tooth.

What are the benefits of a white crown?

White crowns are made from a durable porcelain which can resist staining. The material used for these crowns not only mimics the coloration of your tooth, but also the texture, with its semi translucency. Crowns are often used to replace damaged tooth structure after a root canal procedure or extensive tooth decay. Continue reading

White Dentistry in Wilkes Barre

106401331 1 White Dentistry in Wilkes BarreTrucksville cosmetic dentist Dr. James DeFinnis uses cosmetic dental procedures and treatments to provide his patients with the smiles of their dreams. Often, however, Dr. DeFinnis’ Back Mountain dental patients need more than strictly cosmetic dental procedures to achieve the healthy, functional, and attractive smiles they desire, so Dr. DeFinnis uses a technique called white dentistry to not only improve the appearance of his patients’ smiles, but also restore his patients’ smiles.

What is White Dentistry?

Once upon a time, dental restorations were primarily made from dark-colored heavy metals. Up until about a decade ago, dental fillings were made from amalgam—a combination of mercury, silver, tin, copper, and other trace metals—and not only left dark spaces in an otherwise white smile, but also presented the danger of mercury exposure by leaking and breaking down from normal wear and tear. Dr. James DeFinnis explains who needs Cosmetic Sedation Dentistry

Most of us weren’t born with a naturally perfect smile. There’s always something that isn’t quite right, whether its misshapen teeth, gaps, damage or discoloration. These imperfections can make it very uncomfortable to show your smile, even around friends and loved ones. Even with the stress and self-consciousness that goes with having a lackluster smile, fear of the dentist causes many people to never even try to improve the situation. Sedation cosmetic dentistry can change all that.

Sedation Cosmetic Dentistry Information

Cosmetic dentistry is designed to give people their most beautiful, dazzling smile. Cosmetic dentists are the ones who give Hollywood stars their perfect, bright white teeth. These dentists are qualified to handle all the normal dental health procedures of your regular dentist, but also offer cutting-edge treatments to beautify your pearly whites. Laser whitening, porcelain veneers and invisible orthodontics are among the many treatments offered by cosmetic dentists.

Sedation dentists like Dr. James DeFinnis specialize in treating patients who experience fear and anxiety about visiting the dentist. Also referred to as “sleep dentists,” sedation dentists offer patients anti-anxiety medications or (in some cases) anesthetic options for making their dental visits as stress-free and pain-free as possible.

For many patients, it’s embarrassment over their smile or their tooth condition that makes them nervous about seeing a dentist in the first place. Sedation cosmetic dentistry is specially designed for this sort of patient. Sedation cosmetic dentists understand the frustration and lack of confidence that come with an unsatisfying smile, and provide their patients with a calming and confidence-building dental experience.

Sedation Cosmetic Dentistry Costs

Even for standard checkup and cleaning visits, dental care can be expensive. Most insurance providers offer very limited coverage for special procedures, causing both sedation and cosmetic dentistry patients to pay out of pocket. In cosmetic dentistry, the costs can be equated with cosmetic surgery, which is also rarely covered by insurance providers. Since it’s seen as voluntary, rather than necessary, treatment, insurance companies typically don’t offer any assistance in offsetting cosmetic surgery or dentistry costs.

Sedation dentistry requires the use of sedatives or anesthesia, which is also paid for out of pocket. For most basic visits, sedation dentists will administer anti-anxiety medications such as diazepam (Valium) or triazolam (Halcion). These medications can cost up to $400, depending on your insurance and prescription coverage.

For more extensive procedures, anesthetics ranging from regular nitrous oxide “laughing gas” up to general or intravenous (IV) anesthesia may be recommended. Anesthetics must be administered by a dental anesthesiologist, who are typically not part of your dentist’s practice. Anesthesiologists typically bill in time increments rather than by the procedure, so their rates may escalate by procedure. The cost of anesthetics is rarely covered in cosmetic and sedation dentistry, meaning patients must pay for both the anesthesia itself and the billing from the dental anesthesiologist.

Despite the out-of-pocket costs, cosmetic dentistry patients generally consider their treatments a small price to pay for confidence and feeling attractive. More and more people are turning to cosmetic sedation dentistry as a way to get the brilliant, beautiful smile they’ve always wanted

For patients looking to close their dental gap and possibly conceal deep dental stains and correct minor smile flaws like small cracks and chips in their teeth, cosmetic dental bonding is a safe, non-invasive and effective procedure.

During the bonding process, Dr. DeFinnis will apply composite resin, a safe and durable putty-like substance, that has been tinted to match the color of your smile to the tooth or teeth in question. Then, Dr. DeFinnis will expertly sculpt and shape the composite resin to close your gap, conceal your stain, or correct your dental gap or chip. Once your restoration is securely in place, Dr. DeFinnis will harden and set it with a special curing light, and then polish and shine it so that is appears natural and blends in seamlessly with your natural tooth structure. The Holidays are Over, but Winter is Still Upon Us

blonde in red winter hat The Holidays are Over, but Winter is Still Upon UsEven though the holidays have come and gone and 2012 is upon us, it’s still the dead of winter here in Pennsylvania. Caring for your teeth this time of year can be tricky, so Wilkes Barre cosmetic dentist Dr. James DeFinnis has a few tips for you. Keep these winter dental health tips in mind to keep your smile healthy and dazzling while we wait for spring to bloom.

Smile Tips to Survive a Pennsylvania Winter

  • Use chapstick and lips balm to keep your lips hydrated during the cold winter months and prevent cold sores. Also, drink plenty of water to prevent dry mouth and the oral problems that come along with it, including oral thrush and gum disease.
  • Even after the holidays are over, it’s fun to enjoy some festive holiday drinks. To protect your teeth and gums from the effects of these drinks, including eggnog, hot chocolate, and holiday lattes, as well as from the effects of acidic and tooth-staining beverages, such as red and white wine, sip on water and snack on cheese and other oily foods once you finish your festive beverage. Home Remedies for Oral Problems

yogurt Home Remedies for Oral ProblemsDuring holiday celebrations, you want to keep your mouth and smile beautiful for any unexpected mistletoe moments. What happens if you get a minor dental issue and you can’t reach Dr. DeFinnis? Many of your common household products can bring dental relief. Try these home remedies to help fix your cosmetic problems on the spot and keep your mouth beautiful.

Bad breath: Yogurt, gum

To keep your breath smelling fresh, carry a pack of gum or mints, or a breath spray, to help cover the smell. Make sure your mouth is clean and free of bacteria and avoid eating smelly foods like onions and garlic. Yogurt, on the other hand, can destroy the bacteria in your mouth that cause bad breath. The compounds in yogurt create an unhealthy environment for odor-causing bacteria to live in.

Dry lips: Moisturizer, papaya

Chapped lips are painful and unappealing. Moisturizing lip balm and skin lotions can cure the problem. Papaya peel can also dissolve dead skin cells to leave your lips and skin smooth.

Whitening Gum: Many people like chewing gum after a meal to freshen their breath, but why not whiten their teeth at the same time? But for whitening, SuperSmile Professional Whitening Gum, for example, also contains baking soda to help fight bacteria and remove surface stains.
